Now, let’s get down to business — naming these sweet babies!
Their Story
If you want to learn a bit more about these two babies before voting on their names, here’s your chance—otherwise, just scroll down to the poll.
The easiest way to tell if a nanny goat is about to give birth is if she runs off to be alone, usually in some brush. Goats are herd animals. It’s not natural for them to be by themselves. Once I called the goats in and realized she was staying away from herd, I knew something was up.
Sure enough, once I coaxed her to return to the goat barn with some sweetfeed, the first baby popped out!
Let me tell y’all, momma goat did NOT like me touching her baby, which is a good thing. Some breeds, like Boer, are so domesticated that momma goats sometimes leave their babies (this is especially true when you ring the food bell). Even some of our Boer goats have a “what baby?” mentality. I’m unsure what kind of goat the momma is, but she was very protective. She headbutted me once or twice during the whole ordeal.
We eventually got her into a birthing pen. We keep new mommas and their babies in these pens for a few weeks until the babies are big enough, quick enough, and smart enough not to get eaten or kicked out in the main field.
Then something magical happened. We captured the twin’s birth on video! Fair warning to the squeamish: It can be gross if you’re not used to it.
Usually, we let the mommas clean on their own, as that helps with the bonding process. Since it was late, we decided to help her out by cleaning off the babies. Again, she did NOT like me touching her babies, lol.
And now look at them. The babies are getting bigger and hopping around everything. They are still a bit spooked by humans—they’re not as friendly as our Nubians, but they are super cute (and a bit rascally)!
